Chapter 19
There was still some afternoon light to burn, and since Ryder was in charge of the shop, I continued with my investigation. I was more determined than ever to solve the crime. It also helped get my mind off the morning argument with Briggs.
I was at a bit of a loss on which way to turn first, so I drove toward Blake's house. It was dark on my first two visits to the property. Maybe some sunlight would give me a new perspective of the place and, at the same time, illuminate some overlooked evidence.
It was quiet at the Jensen property. The place looked even more dilapidated in daylight. The roof on the house was a mere patchwork of shingles and tar paper. In some places the siding had fallen off in chunks. The neighboring houses were separated by large swaths of unused land. I parked and walked up the driveway to the back of the house. The stretch of yard between the house and studio was dry and filled with patches of tall weeds. I walked around the area in front of the studio for a few minutes, not realizing I was being watched until I heard the crunch of grit under shoes.
I swung around and came face to face with Blake's ex-wife, Glenda. She'd removed the fake lashes and makeup and looked far prettier. Even with the scowl she was shooting my way. She was holding some papers in one hand and her phone in the other. Her pink shorts matched her equally pink sandals.
"What are you doing here? You're that woman who was here the night Blake was killed." She held up the phone. "Should I call the police?"
"No, no I'm sorry. I just decided to check around to see if the police missed any evidence. The whole thing has left an indelible mark on me. Seeing that poor man on the stage, in all that bloodâ"
As I spoke, some of the color drained from her face.
I covered my mouth dramatically. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up. I'm sure you're still very distressed about it all."
"Of course I am. Evidence? I don't understand. Are you part of the police force?" It was a logical question. I needed a good answer. Occasionally, I'd found, the truth worked best.
"To be honest, Ms. Jensen, I'm somewhat of an amateur sleuth. I've solved a number of murders in the area. I spoke to Riley this morning." She winced at the name, assuring me their dislike was mutual. "Riley mentioned they hadn't apprehended a suspect yet."
"The police are taking their time, that's for sure. I've told them they need to be questioning Liz instead of spending so much time on me. I had no reason to kill Blake. We had a good run and it's over. We were still friends." It was certainly a different assessment of their relationship than the one I'd heard from Liz and Riley. But maybe they had an ulterior motive for pointing the guilty finger at Glenda.
